Ladysmith

15 minute drive

Extensive revitalization projects, have ensured that the historic and picturesque community of Ladysmith is a popular destination for residents and tourists alike.

" Remote enough to feel free of urban nuisances, urban enough not to feel remote. "
-- Harrowsmith Country Life Magazine, April 2000

The number of tourists to the town more than doubled from 2000 to 2001, and its appeal as an ideal place to live is evidenced by the jump in population from 4,300 in the mid 80's to almost 6700 by 2000.

" I think people are finally discovering one of Vancouver Island's best kept secrets. "
-- Chamber of Commerce Manager, Suzanne Prest

It's not a wonder that Harrowsmith Country Life magazine recently selected Ladysmith as one of the "ten prettiest towns in Canada", and that it won a provincial award as the most beautiful community on Vancouver Island.

Situated in North Cowichan, one of the oldest municipalities in British Columbia, picturesque Chemainus attracts over 500,000 visitors annually. Originally established around farming and resource industries, Chemainus faced an uncertain future during the 1980's with the closure of a local mill. However, earning a reputation as "The Little Town that Did", Chemainus transformed itself into Canada's largest permanent outdoor art gallery, with the addition of stunning murals painted on buildings throughout the community.

"...a new vision for the future evolved with the inventive people of Chemainus. That vision was to encompass the idea of giant outdoor wall murals in a revitalization strategy. This vision has earned Chemainus worldwide fame as a memorable tourist venue."
